Humility is a core value in the Christian life. Jesus, who was the Son of God, exemplified humility by choosing to serve others and by sacrificing Himself for us. Humility doesn’t mean thinking less of yourself; it means thinking of yourself less. It’s about recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God and that we should live in a way that reflects His love and grace.
Jesus is the ultimate example of humility. Although He was God, He humbled Himself to serve others, even washing His disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17). His greatest act of humility was giving His life on the cross for our sins. He didn’t come to be served but to serve and give His life for the salvation of humanity.
Scripture:
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Mark 10:45 (NIV)
“Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant…” – Philippians 2:5-7 (NIV)
When we follow Jesus’ example, we live humbly, putting others’ needs before our own.
Humility starts with recognizing that we are nothing without God. We are dependent on Him for everything—our breath, our strength, our wisdom, and our salvation. Humility is acknowledging that we can’t do life on our own and that we need God’s guidance and grace every day.
Scripture:
“But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: ‘God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.’” – James 4:6 (NIV)
“The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” – Psalm 34:18 (NKJV)
Humility allows us to come before God with a heart of gratitude, recognizing His goodness and our need for His help.
Humility isn’t just an attitude; it’s a lifestyle. When we are humble, we are willing to serve others—just as Jesus did. Whether it’s a small act of kindness or a larger sacrifice, serving others with a humble heart reflects God’s love and brings glory to Him.
Scripture:
“The greatest among you will be your servant.” – Matthew 23:11 (NIV)
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” – Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV)
True humility is not concerned with recognition or reward, but with meeting the needs of others with a heart full of love.
Humility also means trusting God with our lives, rather than trying to force things to happen in our own time. When we are humble, we submit to God’s will and His perfect timing, knowing that He knows what is best for us. We do not boast in our own abilities or accomplishments but give all glory to God.
Scripture:
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” – 1 Peter 5:6 (NIV)
“Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs 16:18 (NIV)
When we trust God’s plan, we acknowledge that He is in control, and our lives are in His hands.
When we are humble, we are not concerned with competing or comparing ourselves to others. We are free to love, serve, and encourage those around us. Humility leads to peace because it takes the pressure off of us to prove anything. We can rest in the truth that we are loved and accepted by God, and we don’t need to seek validation from the world.
Scripture:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5:3 (NIV)
“Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” – John 14:27 (NIV)
Humility brings inner peace and a calm spirit because we are focused on God and not on ourselves.
Humility is a powerful trait that not only draws us closer to God but also reflects His love to the world. When we are humble, we follow Jesus’ example and serve others with a heart of compassion. Humility doesn’t make us weak; it makes us strong in the Lord. True greatness in God’s Kingdom is found in humble service, not in status or power.
As you grow in Christ, let humility shape your thoughts, actions, and relationships. When you walk in humility, you bring glory to God, and your life becomes a reflection of His grace.
